Even though I will talk about the relation between Finns and alcohol in another “Finnish clichés” post, today I want to remind you how much the people from Northern countries like to fight the cold with a glass full of degrees. Naturally Christmas is not an exception. The typical Christmas drink, glögi, can be prepared with wine or vodka but, surprisingly, one of the most famous versions is alcohol free. Really.
And here it is. Because in these moments of love, peace and bla bla bla everybody should be able to get a good drink.
Alcohol free glögi
Ingredients (makes 1 liter):
1 l blackcurrant juice
50 g brown sugar
8 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 little piece of ginger (around 10 g)
The skin of half an orange
Almonds and raisins
Modus operandi:
1. Put the blackcurrant juice in a pot. Add the sugar, the spices and the orange skin and cook it at medium heat for 10 minutes. After that, let it settle for another 10 minutes more.
2. Place some raisins and almonds in the glasses and pour the glögi over them.
3. Enjoy it with some piparit or joulutortut.
Hyvää Joulua!
P.s.: tomorrow we are travelling to Spain for Christmas so I’ll be out for a while (but I have a nice recipe to welcome the new year!).
